Boarding Groups and Virtual Queues are in use for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Walt Disney World

Opening day is finally here and the entrance to Hollywood Studios was filled with guests excited to take in the sights and sounds of the new planet Batuu. This is the moment most Star Wars fans have been waiting for.

Many of us have seen all the photos and videos posted in the Facebook groups and on YouTube about this totally immersive new land and watched in anticipation as they opened Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in California. The expectations were high so Disney announced they would implement boarding groups in Disneyland. If you don’t know what boarding groups are, it is a virtual queue system to enter Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when the land is at capacity. All this is done on your My Disney Experience App. This system is designed to manage crowd levels for this highly anticipated land. But what about Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios? It’s the morning of opening day and there has been no official announcement until we opened the My Disney Experience App.

The land will either have an open or closed status and you can check this status on your My Disney Experience App. This action is supposed to only kick in once the land reaches capacity. It is 9:27am as i’m writing this and the screenshot of the My Disney Experience app already shows the current land status as “Access by Boarding Group Only.”

When the status shows as “Open” it means that Boarding Groups are not in use and anyone is welcome to enter the land. This is what it would show on the app when the land status as open:

From what we read, this system worked very well at Disneyland and it helped limit the crowds inside the land to give you a chance to experience Batuu without the mobs of people. It is a virtual queue system so you are not standing in a physical line waiting for your chance to enter. You have the opportunity to enjoy the rest of Hollywood Studios while you are waiting for your turn. You will receive a push notification when your group is called. You can also check the digital status boards throughout the park.

If Star Wars isn’t your thing don’t fret, your favorite rides wait times are much shorter than usual thanks to today’s opening!
